President Bush Jokes Of Beer Drinking With Super Bowl Champion Steelers

President Bush Met with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, at the White House, while speaking with them he made reference to people drinking some Iron City Beer in the East Room. This was due to the racket that the team was making while waiting on the president to arrive. Chants of ” Here we go Steelers, Here we go!” echoed throughout the White House and drew quite a bit of attention.

Considering President Bush states he is a Dallas Cowboys fan, he had to admit the Steelers franchise, was a really great team with loads of history behind them. President Bush received a Steelers jersey with the number 43 on the back, to represent his place in presidential history. He also received a football with all of the team member’s signatures on it, to which president bush used to throw a short pass to Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward.

Once all of the fun was over, Bush asked for some tips to give to Vice-President Dick Cheney, from Steelers coach Bill Cowher, about the sideline game face scowl. President Bush made a wonderful speech to the team about teamwork, and how this team had a load of character; this is why the Steelers are standing in the White House on the wonderful Friday afternoon. While many people did not feel the Steelers had a chance this season, they showed great perseverance and dedication to find the formula to win.

The Curious Incidents of Drinking Out in China

First up, a warning. If you order Chinese wine, it will probably be pretty awful. Harsh vinegar like you wouldn’t believe, in fact. The best domestic wines they have, if you’re lucky enough to choose a good one, are about level with an own-brand supermarket wine back home. One called ‘Enduring Pulchritude’ (that’s ‘beauty’, thesaurus fans) should really be called ‘Enduring Fortitude’, and not because it’s well aged!

The good news, however, is that here and there you’ll find a smattering of foreign wines that, for the most part, are really quite drinkable. But most locals here in Lishui City, east China seem not to know what to do with them – they obviously never order them themselves for a start, as many a dusty shelf can attest. Furthermore, if you do order one in one of several comfy but slightly off Western-style cafe bars in the city, you might end up with something quite unexpected.

It may be served in a huge duck-shaped decanter, and has been known to come with brandy glasses! Funnier still was the second time we ordered this particular wine – quite nice, really, and a great deal in Western terms to drink out for $15 – when it arrived with a small bucket of ice for us to dip into our drinks!

As for pub drinking there’s not a lot going on mostly due to our location in a developing city and the fact that the Chinese style is more to have drinks over dinner. So we really got a treat the other week when by chance we came upon Lishui’s first place with beers on tap, the Yes Bar. Tiger and Carlsberg, to be precise. And unlike the cafe bars above, it has a real wooden bar and the pleasing look and feel of a classy jazz club.

Imagine our surprise, moreover, on learning first that it had only been open for the previous two days – we don’t miss a trick ’round here – and then that it even sold cans of Guinness!

The actual night time atmosphere of this place isn’t great, sadly. It’s all flashing lights and bad Chinese music, leaving the deck chairs outside as the only good spot. And like many other outlets of various kinds in Lishui, some of the staff just don’t know how to handle us laowai, or foreigners.

One of the first times we went, Megan decided to order us two pints of Carlsberg. In what I can only assume was her usual flawless Mandarin, she asked the girl for two pints of beer, referring in addition to ‘the green one’ and pointing to the tap. Several minutes later, we weren’t even looking at what was on the table when suddenly two lime flavored Bacardi Breezers arrived. We just had to hold up our hands and laugh!

Until next time, dear readers, remember to be thankful for life’s simple pleasures and the privilege of ready access to them!

Drinking As A Way Of Life

For many years drinking alcohol, especially beer was a way of life for me. Did I realize it at the time? Nope. Did it make a damn bit of difference to me at the time whether of not drinking was a way of life for me? Nope. Did I really care one way or the other whether? Nope. Not one little bit. And what did this get me. Nothing, not one little thing, unless you consider a decent amount of debt and a dead end job “something”.

For many years drinking was a way of life of me, and I never realized it. Through the act of stopping drinking, I came to the realization that I had been sleepwalking through life for the better part of 15 years! I suppose this is what happens when drinking becomes a way of life. Was I an alcoholic, that is to say addicted to drinking? I don’t know, all I know id that I drank everyday. When I tired to think of a day that I didn’t drink, I couldn’t. How much did I drink? Again, I didn’t keep a running tally, but I would assume an average of a 12-pack a day. Some days less and on good days (as I used to refer to them) more.

The bottom line was that I drank entirely too much and was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I’ve heard addiction describes as never getting enough of what you don’t want in the first place, and if that’s the definition, then I was addicted, because that’s how it felt. It was as if I could never get enough. More beer always sounded good and then the next day I would wonder why I actually had more. But again, that’s what happens when drinking becomes a way of life.

So, what made me come to these realizations and stop drinking? For me, the final straw was my daughter incarnating into this world, then coming to live with Dad. It’s why I see her as being “sent” to save me. I simply refuse to be a bad influence on her or disappoint her in any way. I’m thankful for the perspective that my drinking gave me and I’m equally thankful for my daughter showing up when she did to help me realize all of this.

Tips to Help You Brew Your Own Beer

When someone mentions going to a baseball game, many times the first images that come to mind are a nice cold beer and a hot dog. It is somewhat of a tradition to drink beer with certain sports or activities. No backyard football game is complete without having some cold brews in the ice chest.

You get hot and sweaty from the game and cool down with your friends over a few beers. Even watching some sports necessitates having a couple of pints. It does not matter if you prefer a Bud Light over a Canadian beer or German beer. The point is having a refreshing brew at your fingertips.

If you are interested in making your own batch at home, then you need to know a few facts about homebrewing and even learn how major manufacturers and brewers make their own tasty beverages. There are a lot of beer terms to learn and it is an acquired skill that many people spend years trying to perfect. But if you take the time to learn a few terms that pertain to the brewing system, then you will be ahead of the pack.

When it comes to brewing equipment there are some standard items that breweries use every day. They have large scale operations that allow the hops, barley, rice or wheat to bloom. You should also know that you may not have the capability to use some of the standard equipment, such as a large oak barrel or a keg. Most home setups operate with limited space.

One of the first decisions you will have to make is what type of brew you intend to make. Is it going to be a cold brewed beverage or a warm brewed beverage? The temperature refers to what the final product will be. Most lagers are cold brewed, meaning that the temperature of the beverage is kept at a low temperature throughout the brewing process.

After you have researched what type of beverage you intend to brew, it is time to consider where and what to purchase. A great suggestion for first time brewers is to buy a beer kit. These kits will contain the ingredients you will need to make your lager or ale. Before you make that purchase though, you need to read exactly what comes in the kit. That way you will know what else you may need to purchase from the brewery store. If there is no local store that has the supplies, then you can always check eBay or a specialty website.

What’s in Your Beer? Ingredients Revealed

Do you know what you are putting into your body when you drink beer? Here is a quick list of the main ingredients in most beers:

  • Water
  • Malted Barley
  • Hops
  • Yeast

Other ingredients will change from one beer to a different beer, but could include sugar, a wide variety of flavorings, and starches. Starches are important because they are very easy to convert into fermentable sugars during the mashing process. This is important because it adds flavor and increases the alcohol content in the beer.

Water

Water seems like a rather simple ingredient that doesn’t need much explanation, but where the water comes from actually makes a pretty big difference in the final product. For instance, many of the popular beers over the years have given a lot of credit to the characteristics of the water in their local region of brewing for their flavor and texture.

This is because water from different regions and countries will have different mineral compositions. Darker beers are better when brewed with hard water, but a lighter beer will do much better with softer water.

Malt

The exact type of malt used to make a beer often depends upon what is accessible from the local area in which the beer is being brewed. Some commonly used malts today include:

  • Barley
  • Wheat
  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Rye

Barley is the most frequently used malt because it is rich in a digestive enzyme called amylase. It is very efficient at turning starches into sugars, which is beneficial to beer brewing.

The malt is actually made from these grains by soaking them in water so that they are able to germinate, and then drying it back out in a kiln. Starches in the grain are converted into fermentable sugars through this process. This is what gives beer its sweet flavoring.

Hops

Hops has been used in beer since the 17th century and is known for adding the bitter taste that you often taste in beer. Different flavors of beer are created by adjusting the content of hops versus the content of malt. You can also get different flavors by using hops, ranging from a citrus scent to more herbal scents. How bitter a beer is will be measured through the International Bitterness Units scale today.

Another added benefit of using hops in beer is that it is an antibiotic that favors brewer’s yeast over microorganisms that can be harmful.

Yeast

There are different types of yeast that can be used in beer, but the most commonly used options are lager yeast and ale yeast. They are essentially tiny microorganisms which are used for fermentation during the brewing process. The type of beer being produced will determine the type of yeast chosen.

It used to be that wild and airborne yeast was used for the beer brewing process, but today there is a better understanding of how yeast works. It essentially takes the sugar produced from the grains and turns them into alcohol and carbon dioxide.

Clarifying Agents

You won’t see clarifying agents listed in the ingredients of a beer because they are not required to be listed. Many beer brewers today will include at a couple of these, such as Irish moss (red algae) or Isinglas finings (fish bladders). The main concern with these ingredients not being listed on the ingredient labels is that vegetarians who wish not to eat animal byproducts may not realize they are in there!

Alcoholic? Do I Drink Too Much?

For many years I used to throw around the old joke referring to being an alcoholic that goes something like, “I drink a lot, but I’m not an alcoholic, because I don’t like all of those meetings”, or some such crap. Then I realized one day that I surely did drink a lot and wasn’t happy at all. I suddenly began asking myself questions about how I was living and what I was doing. About the kinds of people I associated with and the kind of example I was setting for my daughter. These kinds of questions were foreign to a 34 year old man who was always under the impression that he couldn’t necessarily “control” the circumstances of his life.

Was I actually an alcoholic? I don’t know, all I know is that I most certainly drank too much. I drank beer everyday, I know that. I’ve heard addiction described as never getting enough of what you don’t want, and I’m sure of the fact that it seemed as if I could never get enough beer. And guess what? I really didn’t want to be drinking anyway, but hey everyone else drank and besides I had been doing it for the better part of 15 years. Not only had I been doing it for 15 years, I liked it! I liked drinking beer.

Once I began looking within myself and asking the questions mentioned earlier, sand suddenly didn’t want to drink anymore. So I stopped. No meetings, no drugs, no nothing. I simply stopped drinking. Drinking simply didn’t make sense any longer. I knew that I’d wasted more than enough time and energy drinking. And do you know how this has turned out?

I can’t believe that I wasted so much time self medicating myself, when all of the answers I thought alcohol gave me were right here all along. Now I live my life as the good lord intended, without the aid of unnatural substances. My point to writing this article is simply to explain that it is possible to live without such things as alcohol in your life, and is actually much better. If a guy who used to drink an average of 12 beers a day for the better part of 15 years can walk away, without the aid of anything outside of himself and some faith, anyone can.

Draft Beer – How to Enjoy a Great Glass

In order to fully enjoy draft beer, one should know how to properly drink a glass. Following the guidelines below to get the most out of your draft beer.

In order to fully appreciate a glass of draft beer, first start by simply admiring the glass itself. Use your eyes to examine the clarity, the foam, and most importantly, the color of the draft. Tap beers often have colors that are distinctive, subtle, and complex.

A gentle swirl helps release the aromatic compounds and taste components in the beer. This swirling effect is most effective on tap beer.

After a gentle swirl, take a quick sniff of the beer and you will notice the abundance of aroma is emitted from your draft. Make sure you are taking small quick sniffs because long sniffs will only saturate your smell receptors. Let the smell sink in.

Now you can finally take a sip on your draft beer. Let the liquid rest on the tongue. Notice all the different flavors and sensations your tongue feels. Sweet flavors are more obvious at the tip. Acidic will be noticed on the back sides, and bitterness at the back. Make sure the liquid is sensed at the back of your tongue.

After taking your very first sip, try to get some aroma into your nasal cavity the second time around. The way to do this is to hold a small amount of liquid at bottom of your mouth, then place the tip of your tongue behind your two front teeth, and draw air in through your mouth. This will push the aroma up through your nasal cavity and towards your smell receptors. This technique is very similar to the way wine drinkers appreciate their wines. Draft beer drinkers who practice this technique will be able to get the most out of drinking their beers.

Repeat these steps until you have finished your draft beer. This guideline is ideal for beer drinkers who are taste testing a beer sampler. Please keep in mind though, that five or six beers can confuse the palate. When tasting a beer sampler, choose one that is has less than five different types of beers. Always start with the least intense beer and move your way up. Clear your palate by eating plain bread or crackers or by drinking still water.

Bottoms up!

Drinking Beer and Wine Can Help Build Strong Bones

The next time you have a drop too much, maybe you can try giving this excuse to your significant other half. I bet this is the best thing a man would like to read and know and a woman’s worst nightmare. However, nothing can be further than the truth, the key towards stronger bones is through drinking beer and wine but in moderation.

A study published in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition has offer suggestions that to keep your bones strong and healthy, drinking a beer or two or a glass of wine everyday can have a beneficial effect on your bones by boosting oestrogen levels. However, if you drink anything more or choose hard liquor instead of wine or beer, it will have the reverse effect and will actually weaken your bones instead of strengthening it.

The study reveals the extend of the effect that alcohol can have on bone mineral density and it was larger than any other single nutrient tested, even for calcium. It is definitely not a case of vague outcomes but it is very clear cut on the extent that alcohol can have on bone mineral density.

The researchers found that the bone density (BMD) for men who had a glass or two of wine or beer daily had denser bones than non drinkers. For those who drank two or more glasses of hard liquor had considerably lower BMD than those men who drank up to two glasses of liquor on a daily basis.

One of the reason why beer can be a good source of nutrient for stronger bones is the presence of silicon. Silicon is a mineral that is increasingly rare in modern diet but is much needed for maintaining healthy bones. The silicon content found in beer is at the very minimum accountable for some of the bone building effects in men. For women, too few of them drank beer in the study to make a conclusion on how the mineral affected female bone density.

Why beer and wine are also better choices than liquor for people looking for an alcoholic drink is because beer and wine contain potentially beneficial plant substances such as resveratrol whereas for hard liquor, it has had most of its natural substances removed during its distillation processes.

However, one has to take note that while alcohol may assist in strengthening and building healthy bones by boosting oestrogen levels, it may also have the adverse effect on increased breast cancer risk found in women even though they may drink moderately. At the end of the day, it is important to understand that drinking moderately can be very beneficial and helpful to maintaining your bone mass. It is drinking too much that will actually have an adverse effect on your health and bone mass.

Does Beer Have Any Health Benefits?

There has been and probably always will be a big debate on whether beer has true scientific evidence that it is good for your health. Recently the University of Maryland conducted a study on the health benefits from beer consumption; this study has shown a few great benefits, if true, can help a variety of age-related problems.

However all the studies did point out that alcoholic beverages needed to be consumed in moderation, not drinking binges of as many beers you can down in an hour. When done in moderation some studies showed a link between lowered chances of coronary heart disease, a common heart problem for aging men. This was one of the largest benefits, because of the big difference between beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers; other benefits are smaller and could be caused by variables in the clients tested.

Another survey of over 100,000 adults showed a huge decrease of beer drinkers getting coronary artery disease. This was a substantial drop from non-beer drinkers in the study. This was said to be due to the high amount of B-Vitamins in most beer, which in the end positively affected the blood levels in a person. Great news for beer drinkers! Bone material has also seen positive effects of beer consumption. The study suggested that beer can help maintain bone density, but too much beer can also increase the chance for bone fractures, which is why finding a healthy balance is just as important as drinking it.

All the benefits were found among older adults and elderly people, very little benefits, if any showed up for young adults. This may come to a surprise but it is very true! Should you want to see the benefits of beer drinking, youe must wait till after the college age and when you are a few years older.

Is Beer Drinking and Gout Related?

Among all of the factors that promote an accumulation of uric acid, the consumption of high levels of alcohol is one of the foremost in the development of gout. This does not necessarily mean that every individual who regularly consumes a modest amount of alcohol will develop gout. Actually, the medical field has determined that the levels of uric acid vary greatly based upon the differing types of alcoholic drinks.

Researchers in the medical field have, for many years, deduced that dietary habits such as those high in alcohol, salt and red meat together with a lifestyle containing little or no exercise contributes to the development of gout. Unfortunately, many individuals, especially in the Western countries, adopt these dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles. The adoption of these types of lifestyles usually occurs around middle age. Gout is often referred to as the “disease of kings” because of the rich diets and lazy physical routines.

Researchers in the medical field have found that men who consume an excessive amount of specific kinds of alcoholic beverages tend to suffer from an increased risk of gout development. Beer seems to be a major contributor to this condition. It is known that the body expels uric acid through urination and that accumulation of uric acid within the body leads to gout. The interesting thing about the alcohol / gout-related discovery is that alcohol seems to affect uric acid production AND the expulsion of uric acid from the bodily system.

Once consumed, alcohol transforms into lactic acid. This transformation affects the kidney’s ability to expel uric acid from our bodies. Since an excessive intake of alcohol means an excessive level of lactic acid, the uric acids now have “stiff” competition in the race to be removed from the body. Lactic acid slows the removal of uric acid which, in turn, translates to uric acid build up which again, in turn, translates to gout.

Studies have shown that specific types of alcohol pose more risk of promoting gout than other types. It has been found that the moderate consumption of wine or spirits poses little to no risks associated with gout. On the other hand, and to the great disappointment of beer swillers everywhere, beer above all other forms of alcohol poses the greatest risk of promoting gout.

It seems that some of beer’s non-alcoholic ingredients are the culprit. Of all of the alcoholic beverages available, beer is the only one which includes Purines. Anyone who has researched the causes of gout will know that a Purine rich diet leads to a high production of uric acid. This being the case, some scientists still don’t think the Purines in beer are to blame. The reason why is because a Taiwanese study on vegetarians who ate a purine rich diet showed that their bodily systems still had a low gout risk.

This is puzzling. Some studies seem to point to the fact that a Purine rich intake will increase the risk of gout. The fact that beer has a high level of Purines seem to make the belief which states that excessive beer drinkers are more likely to develop gout a no-brainer. Researchers believe that excessive beer drinking leads to gout when combined with other lifestyle factors. It has been found that beer drinkers often combine their beer intake with salty and fatty snacks. Also, beer drinkers seem to have more of a sedentary lifestyle. The combination of these factors point towards gout.

Overindulging in alcohol consumption occasionally will not dramatically affect a person’s chances of developing gout but constant overindulgence in beer drinking, combined with poor dietary choices and a “lazy” lifestyle of inactivity will only promote the onset of gout and it’s excruciating symptoms. A simple and natural component of a gout remedy would be too simply, stop drinking beer. Easier said than done!

Gout Remedy Online provides information on Gout Treatment that actually works. All-natural gout remedy that will end painful gout symptoms, lower levels of uric acid naturally and lose weight along the way.
